About the Instructor:
Gaston McKenzie is Jamaican/British artist, based in Tampa, with a passion for capturing the essence of space and place in the watercolor medium. An architect by profession who practiced and taught in his native Jamaica and the UK, he now concentrates on studio and plein air painting and teaching. His loose washes utilizing juicy darks is ideal for reinterpreting our urban environment, his mantra being “Capture the spectacular in the mundane”. Plein Air (outside) watercolor painting on a regular basis is, he believes, is the best way to learn how to see and simplify values, shapes and forces one to distill what presents itself to the viewer. He is also an avid pen and ink Urban Sketcher and sometimes incorporates ink drawing into his watercolor work.
Gaston travels abroad extensively and is working on an art travelogue that he plans to publish.
About the Workshop:
Gaston’s workshop will be centered on the Old Hyde Park Art Center and its locality. All in attendance will be encouraged to get out and work on a Plein Air piece.
